Service to Your Community Can Be Learning
Between 2008 and 2017, my students and I worked together on media relations plans for area non-profit organizations who could not afford such materials from an advertising agency or PR firm. Students learned about media relations while helping those non-profit organizations and adding examples of their work to their academic portfolios. They were also able to better prepare for internships and jobs. In 2014, we added an online component to our work, and our community partner/client list expanded.
My work involved selecting and contacting the client/community partner, where I presented the 3 requirements for working with us: (1) the partner must be a recognized 501c3 non-profit organization; (2) the organizational contact person must be available for student inquiries throughout the project as they prepare materials; and (3) he/she must be willing to meet with the students either in-person or via Skype at both the beginning and end of the project. Once our partnership was secure, I briefed the students on each client/community partner. The Latest Project: We Learn Together: Discussions in Diversity
In the Fall 2020 semester, students created educational videos about issues in diversity for the community as part of We Learn Together: Discussions in Diversity. Please visit our site: |
